THUNDER AND LIGHTNING
A Portland tradition since 1961, this post-holiday concert features performances by the Philharmonic Orchestra, Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, Portland Youth Conservatory Orchestra, Young String Ensemble, and an Alumni Orchestra. The popular event showcases Portland Youth Philharmonic’s entire roster of 300 musicians, as well as an orchestra of nearly 100 alumni, drawing from the organization’s 95 years.
Enjoy the vibrancy of Johann Strauss II’s Thunder and Lightning Polka, as well as Gioachino Rossini’s William Tell Overture, plus many more. Be astonished by the vivid storm of exciting musical excellence on display.
Hearing is believing. Discover for yourself why The Chicago Tribune called the orchestra “brilliant in all departments!”
Strauss: Thunder and Lightning
Rossini: William Tell Overture
John Williams: Superman March
STRAUSS: THUNDER AND LIGHTNING POLKA
Johann Strauss II’s Polka Thunder and Lightning, Op. 324, was published in 1868. Strauss clearly attempted to humor his audience with imitations of thunder in the percussion section. Listen above to hear the timpani and cymbal crashes mimicking the loud crashes of thunder!
GIOACHINO ROSSINI: WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE
The last of Gioachino Rossini’s 39 operas, William Tell premiered in 1829. The overture to this opera is a staple in most orchestral literature. You may recognize the fast finale section of this piece as it has appeared in many cartoons throughout the years.
